THE PHIL MANNING CUSTOM STEREO GUITAR

“It’s pretty weird boasting about a guitar you had a big hand in designing. So I won’t boast. I’ll just say that none of the production line guitars really did all the things I wanted. So, I got together with the Maton blokes and we came up with this one. It suits me, it suits me fine. I used it on all the tracks on my last LP - from laid back country songs through to dirty rock. I like it so much, I put my name right there on the neck.”

“A GOOD GUITAR IS LIKE A GOOD DOG.

IT BARKS AND SNARLS WHEN YOU WANT IT TO AND LAYS BACK QUIET WHEN YOU SAY SO.”

“ AND NOW I GOT ME

A UNIT EXACTLY LIKE THAT.”

ALL THE TECHNICAL STUFF THAT MAKES THE PHIL MANNING ONE HELLUVA GUITAR

BODY

Solid Mahogany with carved top. Acoustic cavity construction with solid centre to support neck, bridge and string bar mounting.

NECK

Canadian White Maple fitted with double thrust truss rod, resin welded into the cavity. Ebony fingerboard with 24 super fast frets and coral coloured pearl position marks. Positive enclosed machine heads. Both body and neck are electronically treated, stress released and moisture extracted before resin sealing. From first surface coating to final polishing, 20 separate operations are carried out to give maximum tone, frequency range, comfortable handling and straight good looks.

STEREO

Both of the stereo inputs can be used in a single channel or amp. The panning switch enables each channel or amp to operate separately, using the centre position of the switch. This means each channel can be set for entirely different effects or tone positions. And you can from one channel to two without resetting the amp.

PICKUPS

TONE SELECTOR

In position one, the tone of the guitar is Bass- boosted giving fullness. Ideal for mellow styles of music. However on this setting, because of body response, it is also possible to overload the signal amp by picking too hard. Heavier guage strings are needed to use full body response. It’s an ideal sound for using controlled feedback too.

In position two, the selector gives the biting double pole rock sound. This is the centre sound of the instrument, so, with the amp preset to match this setting, the guitar can give a much wider tone selection without altering the amp.

In position one and two, the guitar may be used with the pickup pole switches set on either double or single pole, or a combination of both. For quick changes, the tone selector in position three converts the whole guitar to single pole. The pickup switch controls all combinations - operating neck or bridge pickups separately or together.

PHASE SWITCH

Situated on the lower surround of the bridge pickup. When the guitar is set with both pickups operating, this switch gives a choice of in-or-out of phase. The out sound delivers more middle tone than the in.

EXCITING TO OWN - INSPIRING TO PLAY

Can be used either as single ( split ) or double pole ( humbuck ) - the split slightly thinner in sound to the humbuck. Controlled by both switches on the pickups surround and the three way tone selector.

TO SUM IT ALL UP

“This leaflet is not meant to be an instruction manual. It’s more of an introduction to sum of the features of the guitar. To put it all in a nutshell, I’d say it’s a guitar with the capability to cover a very wide range of unique sounds with no gimmickry. With all the different sounds available, there is no notable loss in volume levels or time lag. I like it and I recon you will too.”

The MATON Phil Manning “Custom Stereo”

- all timbers are electronically dried and stress released then sealed to stabalise in all atmospheric conditions.

Bob and Erhard

A bit of news on our senior RMC members...

In the clip below, the Australian team involved with the movie "I Belong to the Shadows" conducts research with local harmonica player Erhard Etzbach on the style of harmonica which character Jonesey would have played during the battle-stress scene.

"We visited Erhard to research what harmonica the character Jonesey in a WW2 film project might have used. Erhard is going to learn "Lily Of Laguna" which was a popular piece of the times but overlooked these days." says Bob.

The co-writer and one of the producer, Steve Rice is the fellow holding the iPhone. Roleystone born and bred local, Bob Hart, is playing the accordion in the second shot.

Thanks to Bob Hart for sending through this clip.
