Recommended Minimum Musician Rates In Western Australia

When emerging RMC bands start venturing out into the world of paid gigs, we are often asked what to charge.

If your Band charges too low, you will drop the market for professional musicians. When your band has been around for a while, you'll understand how important this is.

So here is a guide of minimum prices. These prices exclude Productions expenses and Travel. Musicians are entitled to make arrangements for higher rates of pay due to skill, reputation, artistry or any other factor considered relevant by the Musicians.

Standard Minimum Performance Rates

Band Member Solo Musician Session Musician
Minimum Call 3 Hours 3 Hours 3 Hours
Minimum Hourly Wage $50 $60 $100
Minimum Performance Fee $150 $180 $300

+GST if your Band is GST registered.

Rest Breaks

Musicians are entitled to a break of at least 15 minutes every hour.

Overtime and Late Night Rates

a) All time worked in addition to the first 3 hour call will be paid for at one and a half times the rate.
b) All time worked between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7:00 am shall be paid for at double the rates.

Door Deals

Where arrangements for payment consist of or include a door deal, the minimum rates are a guarantee against the  proceeds of the door and no person is to be paid less than the minimum rates prescribed.

Travel

The Musician is entitled to remuneration for travel costs incurred for travel outside of 30km of the Perth CBD.

“Travel costs” refers to transport, meals and accommodation costs.

Arrangements for travel costs are to be specified at the time when an agreement is made between the Hirer and the Musician. Travel costs may be included as part of final total or treated as a separate component on the
standard contract.

Where meals are to be provided, the Hirer is to provide meals of restaurant standard to be served in hygienic conditions. Where accommodation is to be provided, the Hirer will either provide accommodation of clean, hygienic motel standards.

Production Expenses

All production expenses incurred by a musician, including providing PA, lighting, and operators, are to be paid for in addition to the minimum rates of pay for performance.

ABN and Invoicing

To assist the Hirer in claiming expenses, we encourage our member bands to write an Tax Invoice and issue it to the Hirer. The words "TAX INVOICE" need to be on that  invoice.

Invoice books can be enquired cheaply at the Roleystone supermarket.

Depending on your situation, you may require an ABN and may need to declare your income on your income tax return. Also instruments and other expenses may be claimed back from tax if they are used for generating an income. This may not apply to everyone, so seek professional advice from an accountant.
